Rebels Picked to Host Regional, Potential Super

According to Baseball America via ESPN, The Diamond Rebs will once again host a regional and will be the nations 7th seed in the postseason. The predicted regional will see the Rebels play against the Hilltoppers, the Gamecocks (Jr.), and The MUSTARD Buzzerdz!

I'm sure that once Brian Walker's Elbow or One Man to Beat decide to get off of their asses, they'll give you some more in-depth baseball analysis. That's just not my thing.

"Wait, you don't like baseball?"

No, I never said that. It's just not my thing to blog. I make fun of people, write snarky letters on behalf of our defensive linemen, draw goofy pictures, etc. I'm a real renaissance man, but Baseball coverage just isn't in that repertoire.

Rebel Roundup - ESPN.com Linkage

ESPN's Coverage of Last Night's Game - Click here for a full recap with video highlights. Here's an interesting factoid which I gleaned from that recap: Ole Miss' last basketball victory over the Wildcats was on January 20, 2001. You know what else happened on that day?

Yep, it was that long ago. The Rebels last defeated the Wildcats in a pre-9/11 world. Wrap your brain around that one.

The Recruiting Derby Heats Up - Bruce Feldman lays out the ten most intriguing recruiting battles still out there, and the Rebels are in two of them. The first is us vs. Bama vs. Georgia for Bobbie Massie and the second is us vs. Florida vs. Georgia vs. Tennessee for Marlon Brown. He actually seems somewhat hopeful about our chances with Brown.

Nutt, Petrino Have Solid Recruiting Classes - That's what Billy Tucker (who?) is saying. While this class is far from both "perfect" and "complete," we're likely to pick up some big time talent come signing day on top of the commitments we've already earned. I've always felt ESPN was always a bit on the "fringe" with regards to recruiting rankings and evaluation. Their incredibly high rankings of oftentimes otherwise lowly or moderately ranked prospects demonstrates this fairly well. Still, you've gotta take it where you can get it. Thanks, ESPN. We don't know why you (outside of Mark May) have decided to love Ole Miss all of the sudden, but we dig it.

Some Afternoon RebelRoundup, Perhaps?

Chris Low Lays out our Recruiting Needs - I'm with him on this one. We need some more beef on the lines. It looks like we're getting the defensive side of that taken care of, but offensively this class looks like it could leave much to be desired up front. Of course, if one Robert G. Massie, Esq. commits to us, I'll sing a different tune.

The MWC Wants an Automatic BCS Bid - That's neat, MWC. It's not gonna happen, but way to give it the ol' college try! Let's be honest; this is all about money. If you aren't going to put asses in the seats, whether those seats be in the stadium or in front of a television, the BCS isn't going to pay attention to you.

Wait a Tick?! Football Causes Concussions!?! - While I am being a smartass with the title, the CNN has a pretty interesting piece on the fates of far too many NFL players. It'll make you almost want to keep your kids from playing football.... almost.

Rebel Roundup: Links 'n' Links 'n' Links (EDIT, new link)

We have all been terribly busy lately and therefore have not been bloggin' like we should. We would apologize but, come to think of it, we're not your damn clown. We'll entertain you on our own time.

Alright, that was a bit harsh. I'm sorry. We love you. Especially you, You TOOL, please continue to demonstrate your genius to us all.

Here are some links to peruse during this Inauguration Day. Go America.

Ole Miss is the 24th most Prestigious Program EVAR - Considering the fact that we have the 25th highest winning percentage of all time, this shouldn't be too shocking. ESPN.com's college football section had a cool graphic which included Archie Manning in the dead center. Thanks, ESPN. I don't know why you've all of the sudden grown some wondrous Ole Miss boner (save for the ever-impotent Mark May) but we at the Cup are down.

Can Dan Mullen Win? - Ivan Maisel ponders this in his newest piece on ESPN.com. He not only explores the differences between the Mississippi State program and the Florida program, but also the somewhat ridiculous expectations we all place on incoming coaches.

Sports Illustrated Declares Ole Miss a Draft "Winner" - Greg Hardy's decision to stay has earned us some positive press. The angst-riddled Archduke of Sackenstein should be an all-American next season. Jordan Jefferson, Ryan Mallett, Tyler Russell, and others beware. Along those same lines, SI's Stewart Mandel feels that the large number of returning juniors with great NFL potential are showing that it's "cool to stay in school." I personally doubt that Greg Hardy is trying to send that specific message but, whatever, sure.

EDIT: Stewart Mandel also has a Rebel Boner - We're his preseason #5. The pressure's on, Rebs.

A Look Ahead: Ole Miss a Top 10 Team?

A lot of folks seem to think so. Whether they be southeastern newspapers, national newspapers, or some of the most recognizable names in sports journalism, people are predicting big things for our Rebel football team next season.

With good reason, too: We return most of our starters and impact players and have more than suitable athletes waiting in the wings for most of these positions. Jevan Snead should be the SEC West's best quarterback and Dexter McCluster will likely be recognized as one of the nation's premier all-purpose athletes. We do not lose a single halfback from our depth chart. Our secondary should be vastly improved.

Et cetera, et cetera.

Be hopeful. Be optimistic. Be proud. But, most definitely, be careful.

Older fans or the well versed in Rebel history certainly are aware of our disastrous 1964 season. It was in that year when the Rebels began the season with an AP #1 preseason ranking, only to finish with a 5-5-1 record.

Others will remember our 1970 season in which an Archie Manning led Ole Miss team started the season with an impressive 6-1 record. Archie was certainly the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy and the Rebels seemed to be a lock for their second consecutive Sugar Bowl invite. Then, in a game against the Houston Cougars, Manning broke his arm and was unable to finish the season. The Rebels lost their final two regular season games and their bowl game while Archie finished third in the Heisman voting.

The most telling tidbit of them all though would be the dropped-jaw inducing fact that we Rebels have not started and finished a season ranked in the AP top-25 since the John Vaught era. We will most certainly begin next season with a very respectable ranking but, if history is any sort of reliable indicator, we can only hope to end the season thusly.

This does not only apply to football, as a certain dastardly son-of-a-bitch fella named Bryce Drew could tell you all about smashing the hopes of our Basketball fanbase (and then subsequently re-smashing them year after year... thanks, ESPN Classic).

It's not that I deliberately intend to be a bitter pessimist. I certainly think we will have an excellent football season next year. It's just that I am simply calling this like I see it. I feel that I have good reason for all of this media hype to worry me. I simply can't shake the memories of last year's baseball and basketball seasons (were ranked #2 and #15 at one point, respectively, before backing into their respective postseasons) or Deuce McAllister's fragile ankle (Deuce for Hiesman, y'all) from my steel trap.

If any season is the season to reverse this curse, this will be the one. Our most difficult games (LSU, Bama) are at home and we are not playing Georgia or Florida. We realistically should be favored to win a great majority of our games and that is nothing short of exciting. I expect an incredible Rebel fanbase next season with packed, raucous home stadium atmosphere and a Grove experience similar to that of 2003. This can be done if the players and coaches don't get too far ahead of themselves and we fans sack up and unwaveringly support our Rebels next season.

Let's just not start any sort of "Jevan for Heisman" campaign just yet.

"For the sake of my musculoskeletal system, please don't hype me up too much."

NUTT on ESPN: How to Defeat the Florida Gators

If anybody knows how to beat the 2008 Florida Gators squad, it's Houston Nutt and our Ole Miss Rebels. Check out the video below. It's a good mixture of the same old Houston Nutt babble and actual, relevant football speak. I really don't know how he does it, but he turns his wacky Nutt-isms and gesticulations into wins. He's a modern-day alchemist, really.

"You've got to score points," huh? Interesting... You know, so long as we're winning, he can say whatever trite nonsense he'd like. We're glad you're on our side, Houston.

New Years Resolutions

Here are a few resolution ideas I came up with which will hopefully lead to a happier, healthier 2009. If any of these apply to you, I suggest you heavily consider them because I put at least 2 or 3 minutes of thought into this.

Oh, and for the inquiring mind: no, I'm not doing anything at work. Apparently I didn't get the memo about not showing up on the 31st.

Denizens of Lubbock - Start driving hybrids, lest you want global warming to increase the severity of your weekly dust storms. Also, do it because Al Gore said so; he invented the damned Internet, lawya.

SEC Referees - Just forget that the replay even exists in college football.

Jerrell Powe - Lose 30 pounds and finally surmount the great literary challenge of completing your first Nancy Drew novel.

Our Rebel frontcourt - Learn to box out and stop being sissies.

Our Rebel backcourt - Grow some ACL's that aren't made of crepe paper or porcelain.

Greg Hardy - Finally get over the "hump" and take the stationery industry by storm.

Mike Oher and Peria Jerry - Buy a lot of cars 'n' shit.

Kent Austin - First, stop sounding like a Canuck. Second, show the SEC West's new diciples of the spread (Petrino, Mullen, and Malzhan) how real quarterbacks play football.

Tracy Rocker - Finally defeat Ted Laurent in an Abner's eating contest. Going 0-11 on the year is pathetic, Trace.

Andy Kennedy - Sign on with the US Department of Homeland Security.

The entire football team - Just freakin' beat Bama for once, alright?

Dexter McCluster - Evolve suction-cupped fingertips (EVILoution works that way, right?).

Womens Rifle Team - Just continue to keep us compliant with Title IX and we won't ask any questions.

Bobby Petrino - Update your resume on Monster.com.

Rascal Flatts - Find some other shitty midday regional football broadcast through which to peddle your "music." Bob that HeAaAaAaAaAaD the fuck on out of here. If Johnny Cash were still alive and if Haggard weren't confined to his drug-ravaged 71-year-old body they'd make a grease stain out of all of you faster than you can put that there gel in your hair.

Arkansas Fans - Get hobbies; lots of 'em. This, of course, does not apply to you, Gonzohog. You just keep on keepin' on.

ESPN - Stop being biased against the SEC! You arrogant New England/West Coast types make me sick! You obviously hate everything about us! Oh, and thanks for the
$2+ billion, 15-year
TV deal
... you YUPPIE ASSHOLES!

Have you got any others? Feel free to submit them via comment.
Have a save and happy new year, everybody. Don't drink and drive, have fun, get laid, et cetera.

Chris Low fucking lays down the law

Chris Low, ESPN.com's SEC blogger, recently hosted a live chat. Check out this question and answer:

OH. SNAP.

Lou Holth Loveth Jevan Thnead

Lou Holtz, college football's 3rd biggest punchline after Phillip Fulmer's girth and Ed Orgeron's existence, really wants to watch Jevan Snead this season. Don't believe me? Click it, lawya.

Jevan, if by some bizarre off chance you're reading this, take note. According to your current head coach, Lou Holtz and Mark May weren't keen on giving Darren McFadden his just desserts. You remember Darren McFadden, don't you? If you don't recall, he's the one who "got dat wood right hurr?"

Senility be damned, Lou Holtz has seen a lot of college football (you should hear him and Paterno get into it at the VFW home) and he knows a thing or two. Furthermore, he's given us a pretty fair amount of shit for firing David Cutfliffe and, for the last few seasons, has taken a tone with our program that could hardly be described as amiable. To see him all wide-eyed and giddy-like over anything Ole Miss related is incredibly befuddling.

Woohoo, yahaa! Lou Holtz! Mark May! You better take a close look at him! You better put him up in there for the Heisman!

Oh, Houthton, thilly gooth. Don'th you worry about a tthhingth baby. He'th on up tthhereth ;) lol
