The SEC is Lightyears Ahead of the Ivy League

...with regards to minority coaching!

Y'all already know my feelings on this subject. If this doesn't further prove my point then I don't know what will. Of course, I shouldn't diminish Tom Williams' accomplishment just to prove my point so I send him, his family, and Yale my congratulations. Looking at his resume, he's had some pretty solid assistant jobs (Washington, Stanford, Jacksonville Jaguars) and could do well for the Bulldogs.

Not Just a Sign of the Apocalypse, but the Thing Itself.

With the release of the release of the latest BCS Standings showing the Florida Gators still at #4, the college football world needs to start asking whether two teams from the same conference might meet in the National Championship game.

Were you wondering whether or not there was some rule against such an occurrence, amateurs on message boards provide a definitive answer.

The scenario is simple - Florida, Texas, and Texas Tech win out, but Florida's SEC Championship win does not provide the boost necessary to jump Texas. The Gators are ranked 3rd and 4th in the USA Today and Harris Interactive Polls, respectively. Their hypothetical SEC Championship would certainly help their computer ranking (5th), but that bump could be counter-balanced by the Gators' game against The Citadel next weekend.

One might even ask SHOULD the Gators get the nod over the Longhorns. Texas comes from a tougher conference, has more quality wins, and provided the only test thus far to Texas Tech. Sure, they've already had their chance. Sure, they won't have a conference title. And, sure, you and I think Florida is going to beat just about anybody by double digits these days. Nevertheless, this college football thing is special because the whole season matters, and Texas' whole season looks like it might be prettier than the Saurians.

Texas' only blemish comes from the greatest catch of the season against an undefeated team on the road. Florida got giggitied in Ben Hill Griffin. This is only to say that there are no guarantees that voters will manipulate their polls (a la Georgia 2007) and demote Texas sufficiently to avoid what would certainly be one of the most talked-about rematches in the history of athletics.

EDIT: Of course the smartest guy in the room thinks I'm just silly.

BCS Busters

Allow, please, a brief interruption of non-stop Ole Miss "coverage" - something The Cup does only a little better than Marshay Green - to propose the following potentially contentious idea: a one-loss TCU team should receive a bid over any other potential undefeated from the "different but not less than" conferences.

A one-loss Texas Christian team will have beaten (current rankings reflected) #10 Utah and #17 BYU with their sole loss against #4 Oklahoma - the very weekend that the Sooners ascended to the top of the polls. I say Texas Christian because I expect them to beat Utah next weekend, and I am of the firm opinion that the champion of the Mountain West Conference will be more deserving than WAC undefeated Boise State, C-USA prefect Tulsa, or MAC mack-daddy Ball State.

The most controversial of these teams, obviously, is Boise State, who bucked into Autzen Stadium and roasted the Oregon Ducks. But, the resume of the Mountain West really outshines that of the WAC. Mountain West teams have wins over Michigan, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, Arizona, and Washington some team that Ty Willingham still, apparently, coaches. WAC has Oregon, UCLA, Rutgers, and Mississippi State. Meanwhile, the other competent team from the WAC, Fresno State, fooled around and lost to Hawaii. Sorry, no dice.

The champion of the Mountain West will have survived a tough conference. That champion looks like TCU.

We return you now to your regularly-scheduled broadcast.

The Saturday Pre-Grove Report and Commentzorz

Law dog training has me down this morning. I'm tied to the old computer. I'm in ur lawyr bookz. Protektin ur ritez.

Meanwhile, I'm watching the mediocre Maryland Terps of the left-for-dead ACC treating UC-Berkley like my dog back home treated the clothes on the line that time before I never saw him again.

Nate Longshore must be just torn up about that damn tree.

Meanwhile, the score at the beginning of the 2nd quarter is 21-3 in favor of the Terps. Like any good SEC fan, I only root for the Golden Bears when they are derailing USC's national title hopes. So, here's to you Terrapins ... whatever that is.

Pre, during, or post-game comments on Ole Miss or others are welcome. A few starter points:

  • Breaking fifty points is important for me today. Your thoughts?
  • The only SEC team Ohio State might be able to look forward to getting embarrassed by will be in the Citrus Bowl.
  • Notre Dame beats Michigan today and without rhyme or reason enters the Top 25.
  • If Vanderbilt is 3-0 after today, they will be ranked for their visit to Oxford next weekend, and the rationale voters will use is a) pity for Bobby Johnson and b) and inexplicably close game between the defeated South Carolina Gamecocks and the glorious Georgia Knowshons.
  • Auburn and Mississippi State gets ugly fast. Auburn tailbacks embarrass the Bulldog defensive front.

At Least We're not...

UAB. This school is pathetic even by Conference USA standards, whether it is their lack of attendance for nearly all its sports, being more classless than Memphis fans, or taking advantage of 15 year old prodigies UAB fails at nearly all aspects.

The newest addition to a list of UAB embarrassments is the addition of what appears to be a miniature golf course in front of their basketball arena.

Blaze (seen in the link because I'm too retarded to correctly post a picture) looks like something straight out of a Gatlinburg, Tennessee goofy golf course. The worst part of it is that their fans seem to be ok with this monstrosity in front of their arena and the proof can be found in this thread.

So, next time you want to complain about David Wells trying to sabotage the football program (if you honestly believe that you're a moron) or that Pete Boone is the most incompetent/moronic AD in college athletics take solace in the fact that the worst thing we have done is a daytime fire works show and not some dragon statue made by some Boy Scout troop in Birmingham.
