Breaking News From Tad Smith

Terrance Henry made a three?

1-9 on the year after this historic make.  Hopefully this gets him out of his atrocious shooting streak.  By the way, we are up 46-28 at the half.

Nutt's Thoughts on National Signing Day

Here's an audio clip of Nutt on an Atlanta area sports radio show (HT: ReplayReb) and here's a transcript of his post signing day press conference.

Pssshhh, and they said he couldn't recruit.

Analysis and a new poll (finally) to come later tonight. For now, I'm still trying to wrap my brain around how Ed Orgeron was supposedly the greatest recruiter EVAR after seeing Houston Nutt reel in a class which could perhaps will very easily have a greater impact than O's career-best 2006 class.

Ole Miss vs Auburn: Watch out for the 3's

Signing Day is nearly complete as thousands of middle to upper class alumni sneak around their offices getting updates on Ole Miss' class while waiting for the cash bar at a various event across the state.

Meanwhile, at the Tad Smith Coliseum...

Our basketball team is going for a three game winning streak in conference play against the Auburn Tigers. The War Eagle Plainsmen have been great at home going 11-3, but only carrying two out of five games while staying in hotels in different cities. Their overall record is 13-8 with a 2-4 conference record.

Auburn has a solid defense with Korvotney Barber grabbing nearly 10 boards a game plus averaging over a block a game. Barber has six double doubles, but the outside shooting of guards Dewayne Reed(35.5 percent), Tay Waller(35.3 percent) and Lucas Hargrove(37.1 percent) against our 2-3 zone could be a match-up nightmare.

Jeff Lebo and the Tigers basically shoot their way to victory or lose by throwing up too many deep shots. With their rebounding improved from last year, the Rebels will have to limit their second chance shots to keep the War Damn Eagles out of the game.

Ole Miss is 12-9 with a 3-4 conference record coming off two surprising wins against Kentucky and at Mississippi State. Terrico White was last seen walking across Sardis Lake, so if he can continue to play at the level he has in the three of the last four games, Ole Miss will have a chance in many of their remaining games. Malcolm White and Murphy Holloway have shown flashes where they are giving good minutes, but they aren't going to be the ones that win a game for you this year. Just try not to screw up too bad guys.

Zach Graham flat out balled outrageous against State in the first half and cooled in the second half. If he can put together an entire 30 to 40 minutes, Graham can be a better scoring option to get pressure off Huertas and White.

Auburn swept the Rebels last season, and I'm pretty much worried that we might be overconfident after a couple good games.

Final prediction: Ole Miss 73 Auburn 68

Ok... so is this the "mystery recruit"?

I don't believe that there is a mystery recruit. I think it's something that Yancy made up to later look good if a commitment came out of nowhere.

However, read this. Ok. Now sure. That doesn't mean anything to us. I mean, LSU is his favorite, and why wouldn't they sign him?

But wait, apparently, Reuben Randle's father has recently stated that if Benton signs with LSU, Randle will not. He apparently wants to be the indisputably best WR in his class. So, that brings up two scenarios:

1. Benton's offer is revoked, and he is forced to look elsewhere (see: us). He signs with us. We have gotten a commitment from the former #7 WR in the country.

2. Benton signs with LSU. Randle does not. Randle signs with Alabama. This causes Patterson to sign with Ole Miss. In this circumstance, we have a LOI from the #5 WR in the country (Patterson).

Sure, maybe Benton signs with LSU along with Randle, but hey... it's the day before signing day. How can crazy rumors not start coming out of the woodwork?

Ok. This is ridiculous. Can signing day just come already. I'm going to convince myself that all of USC's class is going to sign with us.

Something Closer to Truth Than Rumor

Before you all mess your britches and have to run to the powder room, let me warn that this is no recruiting related.  I am not going to tell you that Stwarkonious Biscotti, or whatever creatively named 5-star, will "go giggity."  It is also not tennis related (so, feel free to keep reading).  It is, though, about an athlete of particular popular appeal, who, like his compatriots at the Palmer-Salloum Tennis Center, performed markedly well in the class room last fall.

I have it on good authority (my super-secret, top-level-clearance source in the athletic office) that Jerrell Powe, once famed derided for his grammatically incorrect possession of crayons, made a higher-than-half-the-university 2.9 last semester.

2.9 is not just better than the all-university average, it's better than the all-women's average. It's better than the all-Greek average. It's, obviously, better than the all-team average. And, it's one tenth of a point away from Academic All-SEC.

If you feel froggy, you can contact the NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly the the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse) and tell them what a bunch of racist, bigot, no-account snot rags they are at (317) 917-6003.

Juco's Bird

Ok, alright, I can't blame him for the optimism. We've both got great sources who have consistently given us good information which, at the very least, has been entertaining in that strange, football free universe of February-August. Sometimes they're wrong, but oftentimes they're right. Yes, yes, we've got good reason to believe a lot of things right now but we all know not to count any proverbial chickens before any proverbial hatchings. Damn you Joe McKnight, Keiland Williams, Robert Elliot and all of you other "last-minute mystery recruits oh ok lol omg just kidding Fight on/Geaux Tigers/Rattle rattle" sons of bitches for causing me to loathe signing day.

Having all of that been said, The Red [REDACTED] Cup will be liveblogging tomorrow from about 8AM onward. Come one, come all, and join in. We'll be fielding comments and questions from readers all damn day so. If you're bored at work or stuck in class it will be more than worth it.

Having that been said, please do post whatever rumors you've heard in his post's comment thread. They'd be fun to read and you know it.

Hotty Toddy. Tomorrow should be, interesting, to say the least.

RSCumor

A little bird told me that one of Bobby Massie's close relatives had a recent falling out with a certain smooth talking coach one state east from us and that things got a lot better for us with Massie this weekend.

I'm not going so far as to proclaim him a private commitment or anything, but things are going better than I thought.

Please, post ANY rumors you've heard. I hope there will be several that you feel silly even writing. I've had several come my way that are like that ("What if I told you that Marlon Brown, Patrick Patterson and Bobby Massie are private commitments?")

Spots...

So I'm not generally one to do this, but I started worrying about the spots in our class. I'm sure that the coaches will work it out, but it's really looking complicated.

We currently have 30 commitments plus Andre Sterling and Aaron Hawkins. So that's 32 players who need to split 25 scholarships.

We have been told that Stephen Houston and Eric Smiley are sign and place. That's back down to 30. Gabriel Hunter and Evan Swindall will greyshirt. Now we're down to 28.

But that's where it ends. We don't know who, if anyone else, will greyshirt or fail to qualify. So we're three over the limit RIGHT now.

We're looking at a lot of players who are at least strongly considering us. We may not get a single one, but things look promising with a few. Raymond Cotton, Pat Patterson, Corey Gaines, Alex Williams, Mike Marry and Jesse Grandy have all hinted that we lead. If we only get half of those, that puts us over the limit by SEVEN.

Like I said before, I'm sure the coaches have a plan, but I really hope that plan isn't to spring a greyshirt on six players who think they're really signing scholarship papers with us.

Have any of you heard anything about other players failing to qualify or greyshirting?

Rebel Roundup - Post Superbowl Monday

Superbowl Sunday took a toll on me. I'm still scraping barbecue sauce out from under my fingernails and can't really get my eyes open more than halfway so pardon today's lazy blogging. As for the Superbowl, it was a helluva game. Larry Fitzgerald is somewhere between Hannibal Barca and Winston Churchill in the all-time "ballsiest baller" scale. I still hate the Steelers but, damn, you've gotta respect a franchise that has won six Superbowls. Also, I'm still laughing at that commercial where an animatronic Koala with a British accent got punched in the face.

Anyway, here are some interesting links that you've likely already seen:

Andy Kennedy's Arrest Video - Yes, it's all right here. You can see a visibly drunk Andy Kennedy futilely plead his case to the arresting officer, and a bunch of overly "cop-esque," smartassed comments. Seirously, what's the damn deal with every police officer out there thinking they're some kind of one-liner machine? The only quip that either cop gets out that is at all humorous is the "we deal with the Bengals" line in response to Andy Kennedy warning them that this arrest will make national headlines (or become an "international altercation..." eesh, that's drunk right there). You can also see Bill Armstrong lose his lid and angrily curse at the dirty motherfucking lying son-of-a-bitch cabbie accuser, leading to his subsequent arrest. Watch the video (kinda-sorta NSFW with all of the f-bombs) and comment below, Cup fans.

D.T. Shackleford: Smart, Charitable, Blue-Chipper - We're keeping the recruiting talk on the down low until Wednesday when we'll be live-blogging for signing day. Until then, enjoy this piece on a nice young man from Alabama who may or may not have committed to play linebacker for the Rebels this weekend. We're not following recruiting right now, remember? Anyway, if we were to perhaps recruit and earn a commitment from this young man on the weekend before signing day, snatching him out of the grasp of Lane Kiffin's staff of super-recruiters, we would be adding a heckuva linebacker and an even greater human being to our football lineup.

We Finally Defeated Wake at Something - Yes, we're still pretty good at tennis. Perhaps Ivory Tower or one of our more frilly, Victorian-era sports enthusiast readers could give you more info. Me, I'm too busy watching Die Hard and eating pork to pay attention to a bunch of European guys jump around in tight fitting pastels.
