Jamar Hornsby, a former Florida Gator and coveted high school prospect, committed to the Rebels over the weekend. If you'll remember, the prospect of his commitment caused a bit of a stir in one of our comments threads.
Hornsby was kicked off of the Florida squad when criminal charges of credit card fraud were brought against him. Hornsby got a hold of a credit card belonging to the deceased girlfriend of one of his (also deceased) teammates and ran up a few thousand dollars worth of charges on it. As despicable as that may initially seem, there have been rumors circulating a few Ole Miss forums that there is much more to this story than was initially reported.
Per the story, the card wasn't a credit card per se, but rather a prepaid card. Jamar discovered it in an apartment and, upon notifying the young woman's parents, he was allowed to keep the card. After using it with permission for several months, the University of Florida's athletic department got wind of this and, fearing NCAA sanctions surrounding the card (could it be construed as an illegal gift or benefit?), generated criminal charges to remove Hornsby from the team.
Is this alternate story true? Hell if I know. It wouldn't shock me if it were but, until I see or hear something other than sports forum chatter, I'm not going to bite.

Florida FEARED a situation could have been misconstued into a violation, and therefore was proactive and booted the guy? No, I wouldn't bite either.
Sounds like it's too late, but this is like getting a cottonmouth for a pet. For Hornsby's sake, I hope I'm wrong, and that he goes on to a great career. As I wrote earlier, I'm probably jaded by our recent (failed) experiment in behavioral science, known as Perrilloux.
As a good Rebel, you should automatically bite on this story. You should be going out of your way to make these ALLEGED "stealing a deceased girl's credit card" charges seen like false rumors.
Remember, we really need defensive backs, especially big, fast defensive backs.
well, at least he isn't a convicted murderer like USM had.
still, really wish we weren't doing this.
Halpert,
I'm not denying our need for players like Hornsby at all.
This is a good one. A 6-3 defensive back?
They do exist!
Despicable!
Thank you baby Jesus that Houston Nutt is the Ole Mrs coach and not the Auburn coach!
Aubie, enjoy the bottom of the west for awhile. We'll keep you updated
Thanks Patridge! Now I know what it feels like to be a Rebel.
Who cares? Our coaches aren't getting paid to raise choir boys. They are getting paid to win. As of right now, Hornsby is not in jail, and he's fully eligible to play next fall. Given all that, the only thing that matters to me is whether or not he can play, and apparently he can.
Ray Lewis killed a guy, but there isn't an NFL GM out there that wouldn't take him in a heartbeat. A guy stealing a credit card is nothing in comparison. If the legal system is done with it, I'm done with it.
You people are disgusting.
Here's the quality athlete Coach Nutt brings. Hope you're proud.

As much as it pains me to do this, I actually agree 100% with a poster named "Aubie". Seriously, though, change your name. Aubie sounds like a name for a ten year-old girl poster. But he is right. This guy is a THUG, and it kills me that he is now on scholarship at my alma mater. And Bruiser, quit posting. It makes Ole Miss people look terrible.

I am a 10 year old girl. Hannah Montana kicks arse!
Then I stand very much corrected. But it doesn't get any better than her dad singing "Achy, Breaky Heart." Billy Ray Cyrus = A gift from above.
I don't think Billy Ray Cyrus was a gift from above so much as I think his haircut was a gift from above.
That mullet was certainly born of divine inspiration.
Aubie, here's a tip: When your team has a rough year, be a little more conceding and humble, especially on others' websites.
I don't think the Rebs are intereseted in more lectures about their head coaches recruiting standards/morals. Gonzo has set them straight on that.
Ghost, great point. We may never see a better mane in our lifetimes. And let me make this point about Hornsby. I do not agree whatsoever with giving him a scholarship. However, there are very few other college coaches that I would rather have at Ole Miss than Houston Nutt. At this point in his career and at this point in the state of the Ole Miss program, he is a perfect fit. Nutt's record in his first season speaks for itself. He took a team that won ZERO conference games last year and guided them to second place in the SEC West, trailing only the previously ranked Number 1 team in the land. The man makes the most out of the least, which is the perfect recipe for success at a school like Ole Miss.
And you know the guy is a thug because you know him personally? Just curious. Pretty derogatory term to be throwing around
It's pretty ignorant for those that don't know the whole story to call the kid a thug.
so, tell us the whole "real" story
that's right, because nice guys (not thugs) steal the credit card of a deceased friend. Maybe 'thief' works better. Either way I hope he can play the ball
If what he had done was found out to be illegal would he not be in jail?
In any case Nutt has been around the block long enough to know if the reward is worth the risk, especially for a JUCO. If he isn't all-world or isn't thought of as a liability on campus/team then Nutt wouldn't be taking him.
Well, Aubie, since you have a picture of that stupid sign on the side of I-65, you probably think we're all going to hell anyway. So, what the fuck does it matter if we're willing to have a credit card snatching CB on our team? Everyone deserves a second chance in life (except people who harm the little chilrens).
So Hornsby and Tig will be knocking the fuck out of people for us real soon like I said the last time. If any of you have actually laid eyes on this dude, he looks like a linebacker but he has speed and can cover. So in other words he's Jamarca Sanford with mad coverage skills. Kendrick lewis, hornsby, Johnny brown, Fon Ingram, and Tig Barksdale at safety, that's a wood layin as group right there (Dare I say the deepest Safety corp in the United States?) Anyway the kid deserves a chance, he'll have a lot of fun in Oxford, hopefully he'll stay relatively trouble free and finish off a stelar career with us and help us go to the next level.
Welcome Aboard Hornsby, Championship Bitches!!!!!! Hotty Toddy Mu Fuckas!!!!!!!
Oh that's right, I damn near forgot about Tig. We're going to have some FAST safeties.
I personally believe in second chances and I don't think Nutt would have given him if he didn't feel like the guy could turn his life around (even with the worst possible truth from that story). Also, didn't Auburn have some scandal about falsifying grades for athletes recently? I also have to point out that the coded word for this post was "olyshit", which was the first thing I thought when I saw this headline.
Glass houses people, Glass Houses. Those of you that go to any other school that has a D1 football team shouldnt talk shit about the type of player that other schools get cause I promise that there are people on your team that would and will make your skin crawl. And Aubie if I remember right wasnt your school giving out degrees and A's to football player that took independent study classes.
And this version of events made it on the Clarion Ledger Ole Miss blog.
Guys, update the freaking blog. Geez.
Am I the only one assuming that Aubie is an Ark fan pretending to be an Auburn fan in order to legitimize his ridiculous notions about our coach? I'm sure he doesn't know about the Auburn grade scandal because he has never followed Auburn atheletics in his life.
"Despicable!
Thank you baby Jesus that Houston Nutt is the Ole Mrs coach and not the Auburn coach!"
Doesn't sound like any Auburn fan I've ever encountered.
The girl was killed along with a walk on Florida football player but I'm pretty sure the girl's boyfriend, Joe Haden, is not dead. Unless he somehow passed away between the SECCG and just now. I'm not sure stealing a credit card from a dead girl when her boyfriend is your teammate is worse than if it was the girlfriend of a recently deceased teammate but I think it didn't help that the boyfriend was a starter and wasn't too happy with the situation.
I'm dead serious. If the guy isn't in jail and the legal system is done with his past transgressions, then all I care about is whether or not he can play.
See, unlike most fans, I'm not going to pretend to be self-righteous. Come Saturday, all any of us care about is winning. I'm just willing to admit it.
If I remember correctly, Auburn was one of the finalists for Willie Williams, the kid out of Miami whose rap sheet needed a 3 ring binder.
And for the Arkansas fans, you aren't exactly above it either. Coaches don't get fired because they have players that have gotten in trouble. They get fired for not winning football games. Get over yourselves and admit it. If you cheer for any SEC team, you're cheering for at least one criminal.
"And for the Arkansas fans, you aren't exactly above it either."
Arkansas and "Teh LAWRD AND SAYVYUH of our Prograyum" Bobby Petrino also offered Hornsby a scholly so the Hogs just need to keep their lips sealed on this one.
Knowone disagreeing here Ghost. I'll even take that statement a step farther.
Arkansas just got a verbal commitment from a kid named Zhamal Thomas a few days ago.
I think he's a 6'4", 320 lb. O-Lineman that got into a little trouble back in '06.
He was a Freshman at LSU and broke into a female students apartment one night with a fellow Freshman teammate.
They stole the young womans credit cards and made purchases with them, getting them kicked off the team by Les Miles.
He's been playing Jr. College ball the last two years now (Navarro, TX I think) and now has a second chance to play SEC football.
Hornsby was a punk for doing what he did and so was Thomas.
We're taking the leftovers of the two most dominant and talent deep programs in the SEC, but I'll take what I can get right now and no, we're not trying to put together a church social.
"and no, we're not trying to put together a church social."
Exactly my line of thinking, and I'm just glad to know someone else understands. This is SEC football. It's about winning. That's it. Sure, if you're a coach and you don't graduate your players, or your players start getting in too much trouble, the school may come down on you, but they won't come down on you for it unless you're losing.
Do you think Pillow-gate last year would've been released to the media if Ed Orgeron were winning? No. Our administration had already decided to fire him, so they leaked some information to help support their case in advance.
Just win baby, and as long as you don't get my program in trouble, I don't care how you do it.
Quite true. After this season ended the way it did, a lot of folks in Tigerland would probably like to go back and be a little more forgiving of Perrilloux. While I don't disagree with Miles' decision to punt him, I don't think he (Miles) would have caught too much grief by keeping him and maybe winning two or three more games than we did.
What is the status with Tig? I haven't heard his name mentioned much. Doesn't seem like Ole Miss is recruiting him that hard. Seems like he would be a perfect pickup for us.
Guess a conviction proved your story wrong...
Plus the concept of a dead girl's parents would let a stranger keep a $3000 prepaid credit card is pretty stupid...
