Rebel Roundup - ESPN.com Linkage

ESPN's Coverage of Last Night's Game - Click here for a full recap with video highlights. Here's an interesting factoid which I gleaned from that recap: Ole Miss' last basketball victory over the Wildcats was on January 20, 2001. You know what else happened on that day?

Yep, it was that long ago. The Rebels last defeated the Wildcats in a pre-9/11 world. Wrap your brain around that one.

The Recruiting Derby Heats Up - Bruce Feldman lays out the ten most intriguing recruiting battles still out there, and the Rebels are in two of them. The first is us vs. Bama vs. Georgia for Bobbie Massie and the second is us vs. Florida vs. Georgia vs. Tennessee for Marlon Brown. He actually seems somewhat hopeful about our chances with Brown.

Nutt, Petrino Have Solid Recruiting Classes - That's what Billy Tucker (who?) is saying. While this class is far from both "perfect" and "complete," we're likely to pick up some big time talent come signing day on top of the commitments we've already earned. I've always felt ESPN was always a bit on the "fringe" with regards to recruiting rankings and evaluation. Their incredibly high rankings of oftentimes otherwise lowly or moderately ranked prospects demonstrates this fairly well. Still, you've gotta take it where you can get it. Thanks, ESPN. We don't know why you (outside of Mark May) have decided to love Ole Miss all of the sudden, but we dig it.

I'm getting more and more excited about the depth of this class. I'm really worried that we won't sign Patterson, Brown or Massie, but I'm happy that there aren't really ANY players who are getting scholarships that I don't like.

The top of this class won't compare with many SEC recruiting classes, but I think that #16-25 will be better than many. I know that's silly, but I think it's important.

This class could end up as highly ranked if not more highly ranked than 2 of Orgeron's 3 classes.

He was very highly touted as a good recruiter, but Orgeron only had one class in the Rivals top-25, and that was the misleadingly high (it was good, but not 16th in America good) 2006 class.

Even though he is already on the team, can we go ahead and add Powe for the third (maybe fourth) straight year to boost our recruiting rankings?

You miss the point completely
Ghost.
Orgeron established his highly touted, good recruiter status while on the staff at USC. (Very highly touted as a recruiter by Pete Carroll himself)

The reason his recruiting at Ole Miss was thought of so highly was because of... well, it's Ole Miss.
It's not like you guys were bringing in top recruits on a yearly basis before he got there.

I realize you hate giving him credit for it, but try and think of it like this; not giving Orgeron credit for his recruiting, would be like not giving Nutt credit for his motivational skills.

Nutt had recruiting classes which were more highly ranked than Orgeron.

That's a FACT, Gonzo. If you're going to bash Nutt's recruiting, you simply cannot simultaneously praise Eddie O's classes. He had ONE class worth a damn and that was 2006. However, that class was highly misleading because Brent Schaeffer sucked (5 star my ass) and Jerrell Powe was being counted in our rankings for a second time.

O's recruiting was MISLEADING, Gonzo.

Was it misleading when he brought them in? Was there a way of knowing those recruits wouldn't pan out? Doesn't every school have these kinds of kids that don't pan out?
The FACT is, he got them there. That IS the point.
When Nutt has a few recruits that don't pan out, are you going to say, 3 years from now, that his '09recruiting class was MISLEADING?

Also, Nutt has been a HC for more years than Orgeron. He should have had a few more better recruiting classes.
Being directly in connection with
Texas and Northern La. for 10 straight years, should have given
him a clear advantage over lots of coaches, but then again, he's a Nutt. What did you exspect?

"Was it misleading when he brought them in?"

The fact that Jerrell Powe's 5 stars were being counted towards our recruiting rankings for the second year in a row makes them misleading so, yeah, it was misleading from the get-go.
