A Friday Query

One of our welcome friends from Fayetteville, floating somewhere between "glad Houston Nutt left" and "super-pissed that Ole Miss hired Houston Nutt" posed an interesting thought (paraphrased below):

Your retarded AD [Pete Boone] will fire Houstone Nutt before Bobby Petrino even thinks about leaving Fayetteville.

Now, let's work through this, together. We are asked to compare the immediacy of two events, uncertain to occur: Houston Nutt's forcible termination as head coach at Ole Miss and Bobby Petrino's inclination (however slight) to voluntarily leave Arkansas.

With regard to that immediacy, do we mean a trifling inclination? Fleeting? As in, say a passing fancy? Are we asking if Petrino has yet laid in his comfy bed and wondered, "Would I take the Florida job and leave Arkansas if it were offered to me?" Or are we asking if Petrino intends, very much, to depart when the first opportunity arises?

Let's assume the latter, since it is very likely that even while performing that really awkward pig sooie dance he was thinking about what might come next. Because let's be honest - Nutt and Petrino have very different faults. Nutt wears funny hats, has the crazies, and is interested in meteorology. Petrino, on the other hand, is the football equivalent of Bathsheba.

So, let's refine and restate the question - Whose tenure is more likely to end first and in the expressed manner? Bobby Petrino voluntarily or Houston Nutt forcibly?

Discuss.

You HAVE to say Petrino will leave before Nutt is fired just based on logic. To say HDN will be fired is to assume that he won't win, which some base on the recent losing seasons we've had. However prior to the Ojurawn debacle, Ole Miss was a respectably mediocre program that went to, and won, bowl games, albeit not the high profile ones. Now that we're actually investing money into the program to improve it, I can't help but think HDN will be at least moderately successful as a coach, therefore I don't see him getting fired anytime soon. Ironically I don't think Petrino will leave Arkansas voluntarily for another 3-4 years, simply because less folks will be trusting enough to hire him. I think what is more likely is if Ole Miss can have a little success in the next 2-3 years, and Arkansas can't match it, it will undoubtedly piss off every Nutt hating Hog out there and they will start to call for BP's noggin, much to the delight of Houston Dale.

A "little" success? You morons fired Cutcliffe when he had what, 10 wins? Dale won't come close to that at any point in his short career at Rebel U. Face it...the only reason he's going to last past two years is because he's already cozied up to every big booster not already headed to the pokey. It's going to be funny watching him win no conference championships and go to no BCS bowls there, and the fans wondering what the hell is going on.

You mooks are welcome to him.

Houston Nutt went 4-4 in conference last year with a 3rd-year starter at QB, the greatest backfield in NCAA history, the nation's top center, and a schedule with Kentucky, the Mississippis, and South Carolina on it. He lost 4th-quarter leads in 3 of his 4 losses. He called a pass play short of the first-down marker on 3rd down when trying to run out the clock versus Alabama, allowing them to score and win with 8 seconds left. The only legitimate SEC West title he ever won, he won with the help of an OC and a couple of freshmen he promptly ran out of town. He got handed the biggest gift in Arkansas history with Darren McFadden, and he cost the guy the Heisman twice, and lost at least 4 games every year he had him.

You think he is going to be competitive at Ole Miss, who didn't even win a league game last year, just because they now have a guy who had to transfer from another school because he wasn't good enough to compete at QB there? Look at your schedule. Vanderbilt is your best shot at a conference win this year. Nutt is 1-1 versus Vandy, with his one win coming by 2 points where a Vandy field goal fell just short as time expired. You should beat Memphis (SHOULD), Samford and ULM. Hope you are content with 3-9 or 4-8 this year.

You dumbasses fired Cutcliffe to hire Ed Orgeron, I'm sure you'll hang on to this precious man after 3 or 4 losses to Miss St.

Say what you will about Bobby Petrino, he is here for at least 4-5 years. If you don't understand why, check out the last two paragraphs on this page -

If Nutt is successful at all at Ole Miss he will jump ship (he tried to do it at Arkansas more than once), maybe to his alma mater, Oklahoma State. In the more likely scenario, where he loses to Vanderbilt and Miss St and goes 4-8, you guys will run him out of town and go looking for the next Colonel Reb to make the South rise again.

Hurtt, why can't we say the same thing for Bobby Petrino? How many SEC Championships or Sugar bowls has Petrino won?

See, I can say ridiculous things too.

I'm not sure if you are being serious here...

Petrino has won a Orange Bowl, at Louisville of all places. Houston Nutt has never been to a BCS bowl (and has only won 2 of the bowls he has made, period). While Petrino never did win the SEC while coaching in the Big East, he did have a better record versus Kentucky than Nutt. Petrino has, in fact, won the same amount of SEC Championships as Nutt, despite Nutt's 10 years in the conference to Petrino's 0 games. Anything else?

Juco All-American said...

Of course I wasn't being serious. Do you understand the site?

P.S. The SEC != The Big East of 2006 (West Virginia (who they lost to), SYRACUSE, CONNECTICUT, CINCINNATI, RUTGERS, PITTSBURGH, SOUTH FLORIDA) but hey... they beat their OOCs... Kentucky, Temple, Miami (on the downturn), Kansas State...

The SEC > The Big East of 2006 = C-USA

hurtt, I'm a fan of the Atlanta Falcons, and I can assure you that I thought we had Petrino locked up for four or five years as well.

When the shit hits the fan or he gets a better offer, Petrino is gone.

I know you want Arkansas to be relevant nationally, and maybe you will be in a few years.

But face the facts, Jevan Snead is a great QB and is going to help UM win more games than last year.

To say that he left Texas because he couldn't compete for the job? Seriously, Mitch Mustain was your Godsend until he left for greener pastures when he didn't get what he wanted.

Onemantobeat - yet another guy who doesn't understand the real issues on why Mitch Mustain left. So, genius, tell us why Snead REALLY left Texas? I'm sure this will be riveting, based on the quality of the posting done by site mooks like juco all-american (yeah, I know you are a contributor Einstein).

I'll agree to disagree, as I've already done with almost every Hog fan I've discussed this with. We think he's a good hire, you guys think he isn't. We'll find out soon enough.

And for what it's worth, play calling didn't cost you guys the bama game, two phantom pass interference calls did.

By the way, it just cracks me up that we've been drawn into quibbling with fans of a school that hasn't been relevant in college football since your beloved Mannings old man was at the helm...what was that, the 50's?

You guys are the New LSU, the only difference being that you aren't going to be able to back up an ounce of this bullshit on the field. You got the same used car salesman that we were trapped with for 10 years, and suddenly he's going to be the savior of your program. This because he's told you that he is, which is of course the same thing he told us year in and year out.

Good luck with that...and good luck getting 25 of those 97 recruits he signed eligible.

You thought you had Petrino locked up for four years when he was brought in exclusively to tutor Mike Vick and Vick never played a down? When the players in Atlanta clearly thought they had no reason to listen to their coach, and proudly wore shirts on the sideline supporting a convicted felon? Interesting.

What exactly makes Jevan Snead a great QB? His 26-49 371yd 2td 1int college history? His running from TWO situations so he wouldn't have to compete? Brent Schaeffer and Robert Lane were great QB's who were going to help Ole Miss win more games, as well.

And Mitch Mustain left Arkansas because Nutt made it clear he would never start there again. Nutt did not do this to Mustain due to play (Mustain was 8-0 as a starter, and did not play against LSU despite Casey Dick being 3-17 in a close game) but because he had had his ego bruised. Also, Nutt used a family friend to harass Mustain with vile emails. Also, Nutt kept Mustain from getting equipment that fit, causing him serious foot issues. ALSO, Nutt organized a "team meeting" so that some of the seniors could confront and talk shit to Mustain about a comment Mustain had made in high school and had already apologized for.

Snead, meanwhile, committed to Florida, then de-committed when it was apparent Tim Tebow was coming. He then committed to texass and left when he lost the starting job to Colt McCoy.

Houston Nutt played for Arkansas, and then left in the middle of the night for Oklahoma State without telling anyone, again, because he lost his starting job. He used slight interest from Nebraska to get a pay-raise, inserted his own name into the LSU job search and then used his agent to inquire into the Miami and NC State jobs, all while proclaiming how he would be at Arkansas until 2012.

Petrino has made the right choices for his career and family down the line. He was wrong in the Auburn deal, and he has said as much and apologized to Tommy Tuberville for it. Houston Nutt has never apologized for or admitted wrongdoing in his life. You fell for the media campaign Art Blank bought from ESPiN with his Home Depot moneyt, congrats. Fact is, HDN is twice the snake-oil salesman ever was. And if Petrino leaves in 4 years, I'm ok with that. I have no doubt in my mind he will do more in 4 years than Nutt did in 10.

If you Ole Miss fans want to make this hurt less, do yourselves the favor of doing some research. If a guy is trying his ass off to let you know that your new girlfriend whom he used to date is a lying, cheating whore and you ignore him, it's no one's fault but your own when you get the crabs.

When Nutt left Boise St., their fans tried to warn us. They told us he wa s a snake-oil salesman, and we didn't believe him.

5 years later, we knew they were right all along.

So will you, Ole Miss, so will you.

All of this gobbledygook surrounding the Mustain situation is terribly illogical and reeking of bullshit.

"Also, Nutt used a family friend to harass Mustain with vile emails. Also, Nutt kept Mustain from getting equipment that fit, causing him serious foot issues. ALSO, Nutt organized a "team meeting" so that some of the seniors could confront and talk shit to Mustain about a comment Mustain had made in high school and had already apologized for."

I doubt every last bit of that. You're telling me that HDN thought to himself "well, I've got this Parade All American quarterback, I might as well treat him like a fucking pile of garbage." If you honestly believe that then you're FUBAR as far as your disillusionment is concerned.

Here are the cold, hard facts. Mitch Mustain DID. NOT. WANT. TO. PLAY. FOR. THE. UNIVERSITY. OF. ARKANSAS.

Think about it. He originally commits to Arky outta high school because it's his first offer and he's from the damn place. He then begins to get offers from, well, every-God-damned-body and realizes he has the pick of the litter. He decommits from Arkansas. How does he eventually end up there? Springdale folks pressure him into it and HDN even hires his high school coach as the OC.

Mustain is a snotty little primadonna who assumed that rivals' 5-stars were going to let him run the God damned show. When it became apparent that it wasn't his show to run, he left for the greatest college football program in the country because he could.

Mitch Mustain hated Arkansas from the day he stepped foot on campus. Count it.

Mr. Goober said...

Damn, who's ready for kickoff in Fayette-nam?

Woowee, y'all hate some Houston Nutt like a jilted girl at the alter.

Bobby Petrino gets trashed on the media, oh poor him. Give me a damn break. When you leave schools and teams in the dust like that, you deserve to be slammed by the media.

We're all fanatics here, which means we have no perception of what is right and wrong with our team or our future opponents.

I'm just ready for October 25 when Nutt rides victoriously off into the sunset from whence he came.

To "The Ghost of Jay Cutler:"

The story of Mitch Mustain's time on this campus has been thoroughly researched and documented. If you did a little research of your own, instead of blindly rejecting anything spoken by a Razorback fan, you would know that everything hurtt wrote was accurate.

Mustain DID want to play here. He was born here. He wanted to be the Arkansas QB from Day 1. And when he was allowed to do so, with a credible, non-Pop-Warner offense, the sumbitch was 8-0.

It was all downhill from there.
And yes, it's hard to believe that Nutt is that maniacal. It took some of us 9 years to believe it. Ironically enough, it was his comments following a game against Ole Miss that was the final straw for many of us. If you can listen to that audio and still believe Nutt is NOT an egomaniac, you're kidding yourselves.

"His reputation is absolutely tarnished now."

Straight from the hog's corn-fed mouth, yet he still supports the guy. Forgive and forget I guess. Jesus would totally dig you.

Don't get us wrong: a lot of us think, nay, know Petrino is more than just your average coach. He most certainly can (and likely will) win at Arkansas.

That doesn't make him any less of a douche, though. A point many of you are completely ignoring.

And the point that we are trying to make and you all keep ignoring is that Hootie is a snake oil salesman who really should be coaching at a low level Conf. USA school. You will find that out soon enough though.
